October 2008 Dear Fans, ![]() Last week I had the opportunity to attend a few events on behalf of UCSF Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital. Some of you may or may not know that I’ve had an ongoing relationship with the Children’s Hospital for a few years now. On Monday, October 6th, I participated in the hospital’s annual golf tournament which benefits the Fetal Treatment Center as well as the Heart & Vascular Center. Although we didn’t take first place, our group had a great time and shared a lot of laughs. The next day, I attended a kick-off rally at the hospital. This year, I have the privilege of being the Honorary Chair for the 19th Annual Macy’s Tree Lighting Ceremony. UCSF and Macy’s sell lights or strings of lights for the tree in Union Square, with all the proceeds going to the UCSF Children’s Hospital Palliative Care Program, which offers support at the end of life through caring, compassion and comfort for terminally ill children and their families. Each year the hospital holds a kick-off event for the campaign where patients, their families and staff come together. There were about 20 kids, many of whom were in wheel chairs, who were able to make it to the event and were seated in the front rows. Several of the kids got their faces painted and enjoyed entertainment from a few clowns. It was a really nice reprieve from their daily life in a hospital room. After the short event I went upstairs to the 7th floor to visit with about 12 patients who were too ill to make it to the kick-off celebration. Later that evening I hosted a fundraising dinner benefitting the Children’s Hospital. This is the second year we’ve done the event and I’m proud to say we doubled in size. We were fortunate enough to hold the dinner at the headquarters of internet giant, FACEBOOK, in Palo Alto. I’d like to thank Gideon Yu for his support and generosity. The Bonds Family Foundation has named the children’s playroom on the 6th floor of the hospital and the proceeds from the dinner are going to update the room and supply new toys. We can’t get rid of these children’s illnesses, but we can help make their stay more comfortable. I can hardly believe it is October already. I hope you all have had a great year so far. Until next time, Barry Bonds
